Getting comfy!

I have to admit that I got a little bit lazy and haven’t updated the blog in a while.

That being said, I finally got some more furniture! I can finally say that I have moved to Nebraska. I don’t have sleep on a crappy inflatable bed, no more slouching against the wall to watch tv or play video games!

Oh Yeah!

I also finished my first project at work! Woot! It is now in the testing cycle which means that when i go back to the office this monday, I’ll either have an empty mailbox, meaning that I can put two piece of code together or an angry email saying that something needs to change, which would be quite annoying.

Programming for a big company isn’t simple as typing some code in Notepad++ and handing it to your manager on a usb drive. Well, maybe it is true somewhere, but I’m working on a system design some 50 years ago in language as old. “Why is this procedure so complicated?” I asked the other day. the answer: the company who made this program went bankrupt 15 years ago, and no one is interested in updating it… Oh well can’t be too picky.

Anyways, I’ve been binge watching “Burn notice” recently and I have to admit it is an awesome show. The thing is, it made me realize how terrible recent shows are. The main problem is that the characters are terrible. In “Gotham”, There are some good character, like Edward Nigma, the future Riddler. But then it has characters like Barbara. She is so annoying and useless! I was relief to see her seemingly leave at the end of episode 8, only to be stabbed in the back in the next episode when she came back. The kid bruce is also extremely annoying, even though he is kinda the center point of the whole show. Thankfully, since i watch TV shows online on Hulu, I just skip those scenes.

“Gotham” in general feels like a spin-off of CSI with a Batman theme where they can only hint at certain Supervillain because it would otherwise throw out any continuity and create a giant mess of plot holes. With the exception of the gangster base villain like Maroni, Falcone, The black mask and the Penguin, there is not many other bad guys that they can really use. Maybe the “Mad hatter” could make a great multi-episode story arc.

The Flash has fewer flaws and has actually use villains from the comics, but also has its own pointless female character: Iris. She hasn’t done anything relevant plot wise other than getting capture once or twice. She is set to become the dumbass in distress for the rest of the show, which kinda sucks.

Winter happened…

It’s been a while since the last post but good News! I haven’t froze to death yet! But Geez is it freezing outside! It was nice an warm last week as i was ranting about how I got the short end of the stick with the whole hotel stuff, and BAM! next thing you know Nebraska turn into a real life rendition of Frozen! 65-70 degrees one day, 25 and 2 inches of snow the next! The worst part is it’s here to stay! I should have said Florida During those interviews.

The lake of the apartment complex is freezing fast!

On the bright side, having received a nice paycheck and being fully refunded for the hotel, I was able to start furnishing my apartment! Yay! Got my self a nice desk, a chair and a TV to start with. I can finally use my computer without having to slouch against the wall, which was kinda uncomfortable after a while. Still waiting for my bed to arrive. The inflatable mattress thingy is OK, but having a real bed will be nice. Next, I probably look for a couch and a bookshelf, a nightstand would be nice too.

On a small side note, there was an earthquake last week! It was in Kansas but we felt it all the way here. Having lived for many years in Japan, I am keen to know when an earthquake occurs. Sometime when a decent one was going to happen, you could  feel the first few tremors before it really started shaking, making you feel like you had ESP and knew it was going to happen before it started. It has been a while since I felt a proper earthquake, so I am surprised I even felt it.

Anyways, I’ll post something if the snow suddenly disappear or whatever..

P.S.: I forgot to rant about something! My bad.

Remember Internet Explorer? Yes , it still exists, it still is as crappy as it was back then, and unfortunately, it is the standard browser at my company. Why, oh why does it has to be IE? It is so sluggish! It so ugly! It’s UI has not changed since Windows XP! I have Firefox and Chrome installed on my work computer, but half the company online resources won’t work properly unless you use IE! What a pain! The most annoying part is that sometimes IE will simply refuse to load Google. Need to look up some Cobol Syntax? Too bad, Google won’t load. “Surprisingly”, Bing loads faster than anything else, even intranet webpage. Maybe this happens on purpose so that you have to use Bing…

I hate IE…

Worst. Day. Ever…

There are no words to describe a day like today. No matter what I write, it will be an understatement. I think I can at least give a gist of what happened…

The day started promising. It’s friday, I just finished packing the last few things from my Hotel room and I was ready to finally move into my own apartment. It was not even 7:30 am when thing went way South…

I have been spending quite a bit of money settling my self here in Nebraska, buying a car, renting an apartment, insurance and what not. But when I looked at my account balance, it seemed like I spent more money they I should have. As it turned out, instead of charging my employer, FDM Group, for my stay in the hotel, the entire thing was charged on MY credit card! Every week since I arrive in Nebraska, the Hotel was charging me $500. $2000 of my own money spent paying a hotel that my employer was supposed to pay for!! The boiling rage! How hard could it be to book a hotel for an employee and not making him pay!!

I tried to contact my manager but could not get hold of him (apparently he called in sick). So I contacted his managers. Within half an hour, the finance department contacted me and told me that they had initiated a payment to fully reimburse me, my account manager’s superior contacted me and assured me that he will personally look into why this happened, and even the president of the US branch of the company sent me an apology email. You know someone really messed up when the president herself has to apologies to one of their consultants.

The worst part is that I actually like this job. FirstData is a great company, my colleagues are great people, the work is fascinating, but FDM sucks! Their Administration is sluggish, their pay system is incredibly stupid, the account managers are nearly useless! I like what I do but I hate the whole being a consultant part of it! Only 23 month left of this crap, hooray…..

Tomorrow is a new day and hopefully a much better one.
